Handicraft and music day

On the first and third Friday of each month we meet at Veterans Park in Hoover for handicrafts and music.  We meet at 11:15 for music and handicrafts.  After lunch, the children have free play followed by Plutarch's Lives for the older group.

This term the children have been working on hand sewing as their handicraft and have made a bag for their sewing materials, a pin cushion, a small change purse and a felt Christmas ornament.

In music, we have sung the hymn Abide with Me, worked on a few folk songs, recited poetry and worked on basic rhythm with unpitched percussion instruments.  We have also learned about the different instruments of the orchestra.

After lunch and playtime, fourth grade and up meets for Plutarch's Lives.  They are reading and narrating Solon this year.

Nature study

Nature study has been beautiful this fall!  We have been meeting every second and fourth Friday at Heardmont Park at 11:15 to read the Burgess Bird book and to work on our nature journals.  After lunch and playtime, the older children meet for Shakespeare.

The "Feast" co-operative home school class

The "Feast" co-op is a home school co-operative group meeting in Birmingham, Alabama. Charlotte Mason described education as an abundant feast overflowing with diverse and rich "living" ideas that is spread before the student. Each student comes to the feast hungry to learn and takes the knowledge that he can digest. Our goal as a co-operative is to provide group learning experiences for home schooled children from ages six and up to complement or supplement learning at home. We will meet at different parks and locations around Birmingham each Friday from 11:15 to 2:30 for a rotation of nature study, fine arts, Shakespeare and play time.

Our 2014-2015 school year will begin with an informative meeting on Friday, September 5th from 11:15 to 12:30. Please email Lauren at imaginationsmusic@bellsouth.net for directions and more information.

After the first meeting, we will begin our rotation schedule which will be as follows:

  •  1st and 3rd Friday of each month we will meet for music, handicrafts and Plutarch's Lives (Plutarch's Lives are for fourth grade and up)
  • 2nd and 4th Friday of each month we will meet for natural history, nature study with dry brush x and up painting and Shakespeare club (Shakespeare club is for fourth grade and up)

Each student will be responsible for bringing their own supplies for nature study which will include a nature notebook, watercolors, and a very fine brush (or colored pencils). Parents are required to stay with the children as this is not a drop off class.
“We spread an abundant and delicate feast in the programs and each small guest assimilates what he can.” Charlotte Mason
